Bible Study I (from p. 27)

Not sure if anyone's reading this (actually, I'm fairly sure you're not :), but let's give this another shot.

Read the following passages: 1 Corinthians 15:1-8; Colossians 2:6-7; 2 Timothy 3:14-15. How do these passages show that the gospel of Christ is taught or learned? What do these passages reveal about the actual content of the Christian message?

1 Corinthians 15:1-8 Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: {3 Or you at the first} that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Peter, {5 Greek Cephas} and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

Colossians 2:6-7 6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

2 Timothy 3:14-15 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

what is the difference between an apostle and a disciple?

and why in 1 corinthians does he say "fallen asleep" instead of "died"? does that indicate that they will wake again?

and i dunno if im supposed to answer your questions just to myself or writ it here but i guess i will just write it here...

i guess the gospel of Christ is learned by receiving and listening to preachers and sermons and whatnot...these verses use the word "receive" a lot indicating the privelige of getting taught the gospel. its not something that we have a right to but instead its a gift that God granted us...maybe? i dont know i guess thats what i saw it as. and as for how the gospel of Christ is taught...i guess its by word of mouth that one leads to preach onto others. but once you trace the roots back into the chain of listening-receiving-preaching, it all comes down to Jesus' death and revival (Colossians says we were "rooted and built up in him" and 2 Timothy says that we knew him from "infancy"...so i guess it kinda indicates that whether we look back in time through our lives or through history it all leads back to Christ? but i guess im kind of confused because i thought we were born sinners so how can we know Christ if we were a baby?)

1 conrinthians says that Xst died and was revived "according to the Scriptures"...so that indicates the legitimacy of the Bible..but when the verse starts getting into Jesus revealing himself to others there is no mention of the Scriptures and instead just talks about how he spreads himself through various individuals/groups of people through actual physical appearance.

so i guess thats kind of like testimony stuff about how people share their stories with their encounters w/Xst.

but if that is true how does that apply now in the present day? in the past you could actually physically see Jesus revived (had it really happened)...but now how can we testify Jesus' being when he is not in physical form?

i think i have a loottt of spelling errors. i hope thats okay.

and i dont know how legit i am in this im just kind of writing whatever comes to mind.

i also had some coffee so im a bit wired.

=)

have a great day!

I think by abnormally born Paul is referring to the fact that Jesus says you must be born again (see John 3:3) and Paul was abnormally born again - he was a persecutor of the early church yet God saved him even though he authorized the killing of many Christians. Also apostles are the 12 people who Jesus chose to be his close companions and the ones who started and led the church after Jesus' ascension. And "fallen asleep" was just a euphemism for death that was used back in that time period.

"Abnormally born" is probably not the best translation of the Greek here. "To one untimely born" is probably a better translation given the context. Notice that in the beginning of v. 8, Paul writes "last of all." In fact, Paul was the only one of the apostles who had not been with Jesus during His earthly ministry. So in that sense, Paul was an "abnormal" apostle: he was not a typical apostle.

The difference between an apostle and a disciple is that an apostle is that an apostle is a specially authorized representative of Christ, one who had been with Jesus and had seen the risen Lord (Paul had seen the risen Christ but hadn't been with Him), who had experienced a special revelation of the risen Jesus or who had been commissioned by Jesus to be founders of the church and special bearers of revelation. The word disciple designates a follower and learner of Christ.
